Starhaven Kennel: Quality Kuvasz & Leonbergers

Starhaven Kuvasz are loved and owned by Agi and Sandor Hejja, both natives of Hungary. Agi has been breeding Kuvasz since 1982 and has raised over 16 successful litters of Kuvasz puppies under the "Starhaven" name.

I was in elementary school in Hungary when we learned about dogs. The photo in my book representing the “dog” was a Kuvasz. The description read “Man’s best friend: Regal, Loyal, Excellent Guard- the KUVASZ.” I decided then that one day I would have a Kuvasz of my own. That day came in 1970 when I bought my first puppy Hippitanyai Tabu (Tabu) from my summer earnings while in high school.

Tabu was shown in Hungary and received a “Very Good” rating. While at the “Breed Evaluation”, Antal Kovacs, well-respected judge and past manager of Gyapjus Kuvasz Kennels, gave him an “Excellent” rating. Tabu came to the United Sates at the age of fifteen months. He earned 14 points (out of the 15 needed) towards his American Championship before I stopped showing him.

Tabu was not only a companion turned show-dog, but a protector as well. He accompanied me wherever I went: camping, hiking, picnicking and even to shopping centers. He made sure no one showed any unwanted interest in my car or belongings. He was a very special friend who taught me a lot about the personality and temperament of this breed.

It was 1982 before the first Starhaven litter was born. Until then, during my 12 years of Kuvasz ownership, I learned as much as I could about the breed by whelping, training, and showing other Kuvasz owners' dogs. I had assisted in 6 Kuvasz litters, raised, trained, and showed some of these puppies to their American Championship, before my first litter came into existence. I felt it was important to first pay my dues and learn a lot from other people's dogs-their mistakes and their successes. After all that, when I felt I was competent and knowledgeable enough to have a litter, the Starhaven's "A" litter was born.

CH Whitewoods Ye London Fog, CD (London) was the foundation female at Starhaven. She was Best of Breed winner at the once in a lifetime AKC Centennial Show, while her son Aba was Best of Winners. London was shown at Westminster Kennel Club several times and received Best of Opposite Sex wins.

During her very limited breeding career, London produced some very fine pups, most of which finished their championships. Some of her daughters became foundation females for other kennels around the United States.

At six years of age, after many show wins, she was retired to be a house pet and a loving companion at Starhaven.

CH Starhavens Amity Ablaze (Ami), daughter of London, has taken her mother’s place in the show ring and in the whelping box. Inquiries for her puppies have come from as far away as India, Brazil, Argentina, Sweden and Germany.

CH Starhavens Ghillien (Ghillie) was our other STAR. Daughter of Ami, she was not even two years old when she took her first Working Group II placement, a big honor for a Kuvasz and such a young female.

Soon after she outdid her own record by winning Best Of Breed at the largest Kuvasz entry in North America! There were 43 Kuvasz entered at this show!!! Since then she received another Working Group II (owner handled as usual), proving her quality.

U-CD, Champion Starhavens Kaos of Solari, CDX, NA, ASCA CD, NAC, CGC (Kaos), daughter of Ghillie, shows the working possibilities of the Starhaven lines. Kaos’ many titles indicate what a Kuvasz can do with the right owners!!! She is raised, trained and loved by LeAnn and Steve Miller. For your exceptional care and training of our dogs, we will be forever grateful, LeAnn!!!

Through dedication and commitment, Starhaven has become one of the most respected Kuvasz kennels in the world. Our Kuvasz are guardians and family pets first, show dogs second. Our slogan “Quality before Quantity” is our belief and there is never mass production at Starhaven.

Breedings are carefully planned months/years ahead so that only quality puppies are produced. All prospective owners are thoroughly screened and encouraged to visit at Starhaven. Our puppies are sold only through prior reservation or private treaty and with a written contract. We like to keep in touch with all our puppies and their new families, and invite owners to call us with any questions they might have. We will be there to guide you in raising that very special Starhaven puppy to become the best dog you ever had!
